Termite Disinfestation Services
Isopters or termites include about 2,300 species. Their food is mainly wood. Their society includes the working class, the military and the breeders. They live in warm regions (savannas), such as Africa, South America and Southern Europe. The body is soft, white, and only the head partially or completely has the color of amber. They have two filamentous antennae on the head.
12 different species are mentioned in Europe, in Greece three:
- Kalotermes flavicollis
- Reticulitermes balkanensis
- Reticulitermes urbis
The main difference between termites and ants is that their body is one-piece with a slight tightening between the chest and the abdomen, without the thin stem that the ants have, which connects the chest with their abdomen. p>
Termites live secretly in the ground or in the wood, avoiding air currents and sunlight. Although they usually feed on wood, we also find specialization in other foods of plant origin, dry grasses, fungi, leaves, soil with plant residues, manure from herbivores. All species live on pieces of dry or rotten wood. They eat it, and in this way the original galleries are enlarged into halls. Some species devour the wood completely, leaving only a thin outer shell. Later, when they have taken advantage of the food source, the insects must migrate. Rarely do the colonies of these species exceed 10,000 individuals.
We must remember that termites are the most important insects for wood recycling. The greatest danger from termites is that they live in secret and are usually only noticed when it is too late.
